FÉILE RAIFTEIRÍ 2024

4th - 20th OCTOBER

Antaine Ó Raifteirí (also known as Anthony Raftery) was an Irish language poet and musician who was born towards the end of the 18th century in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo. However, he spent most of his life walking around the vicinity of East County Galway. There are many places in the surrounding district mentioned in his songs and poems. He is buried in Killeeneen Cemetery, close to Craughwell and it is there that the literary greats came together for the first time 120 years ago in 1902 to celebrate his life and work. Today, not only are the songs and poems that he composed remembered, but the multi-talented traits of this famous character are still celebrated as part of Féilie Raifteirí.

To that end, Féile Rafteirí 2024 will start on Friday 4 October and continue until Sunday 20 October. As usual, poetry competitions are organized for people, both young and old.

As well as that, there will be a poetry workshop with Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha, a special lecture on the ‘Ailsing’ singing tradition with Dr. Philip Fogarty, a performance on 'Stair na Filíochta' (The history of Poetry) by Cantairí Chonamara, as well as music and dance with Becky Ní Éallaithe and friends this year. There are plenty of organized events to cater for a variety of interests in the festival this year and Gaeilge Locha Riach would like to warm welcome to the public to join us. Information about the events, the guests, and the poetry competition is available below.
